Al vierentwintig jaar lang komt Modest elke ochtend op tijd op zijn werk. Nog nooit heeft hij een dag gemist.

Vandaag is hij voor het eerst te laat en z’n baas heeft al tien keer op z’n uurwerk gekeken.

Om half elf komt Willem met z’n hoofd in het verband het kantoor binnen stappen. Hij mankt, bloedt en mist enkele tanden. Met een door pijn vertrokken gezicht zegt hij: “Ik ben thuis van de trap gevallen.”

“Zo,” antwoordt z’n baas ongeduldig, “en moet zoiets anderhalf uur duren?”
